FAQs about Mid-range video gear
What people ask before buying Mid-range video gear.
The DJI Mic 3 at $349 does not sound dramatically better than the $79 Mic Mini. It has more range, better controls and it never makes me check. That is what the middle tier sells: gear that stops being a decision. If you are still deciding what to film, that is not worth paying for yet.
Between them they handle the two things viewers notice first. The Godox CS-85T softbox at $69 sits alongside the light and never comes off. Those three are the core of what I film with, and none of them is in the professional tier.
Not on a schedule, and not because the next tier exists. If you are reshooting because the mic dropped out, upgrade the mic. If you never think about your mic, upgrading it changes nothing. The gear that frustrates you is the gear to replace, and it is usually not the camera.
I filmed on it for a long time and moved to full frame for low light, not because it was limiting my videos. The Sony ZV-E10 II at $1,198 is a step below and still comfortably beyond what most channels need.
The Sigma is the best value lens anywhere in this catalog: 4.7 rated, fast, and a quarter the price of the full frame primes it competes with in look. On full frame there is no real mid-range, which is the honest problem with that system.
My mid-range Amaran COB 60d S at $135 lights me as well as anything three times the price would. The $349 DJI Mic 3 is not four times better than the $79 Mic Mini. Where money keeps buying real gains is glass, and it does so for a long time.
Stabilization is built in, so no gimbal, and it is small enough that it comes with me when a mirrorless body would not. I document daily vlogs, travel and everything unplanned with it. The best camera really is the one that is with you.
A mid-range body under good light looks better than a professional body under bad light, and it is not a close comparison. The whole lighting category here tops out at $179.99, which is a fraction of any camera on this site. It is the cheapest visible upgrade available to you.
The pattern is always the same: gear bought for a kind of video I thought I would make rather than the videos I actually make. A gimbal for footage I never shoot, a lens for a focal length I never reach for. The tier was not the mistake. The reason was.
The Amaran COB 60d S, the Aputure Light Box, the DJI Mic 3 and the Osmo Pocket 3 all live in a bag and get moved constantly. What fails on the road is rarely the expensive thing. It is cables, clamps and cards, which is why I carry spares of all three.
DJI Mic 3 at $349, Amaran COB 60d S at $135, Godox CS-85T at $69, the Ulanzi MT-79 tripod at $28.45, a Sony SF-G TOUGH card at $208, an NP-FZ100 battery at $88 and a UGREEN hub at $16.99. Add the Sony a6700 at $1,598 and you have a setup that will not limit you for years. Buy it in that order, not all at once.
Every link here is an Amazon affiliate link. The pieces I push hardest on this site include a $79 mic and a $69 softbox, which pay almost nothing. If commission drove the list, this page would be full of $2,000 lenses instead of the light I actually use.
