FAQs about Travel video gear
What people ask before buying Travel video gear.
The mirrorless body comes only when the trip is a shoot. Forty-four pieces here are tagged for travel, but the ones that go on every trip fit in a small pouch. Weight compounds, and every extra item makes you slightly less likely to film.
The Insta360 X5 at $390 is the other one I pack, because it captures everything and lets me choose the framing later. Between them I get stabilized footage and shots I could not have set up, without carrying a body and lenses.
The SmallRig VB99 Pro V mount battery at $199.98 on sale runs my cameras, lights and laptop. The SmallRig NP-F970 USB-C battery at $63.98 is the smaller version that lives in the day bag. Add the Neewer dual charger at $18 for camera batteries and you can go a few days without a wall socket.
If that is too much, the Ulanzi MT-79 at $28.45 extends tall, packs tiny and handles a phone or an action camera. For phones specifically, the Peak Design Mobile Tripod at $79.95 lives in my bag permanently.
The Amaran COB 60d S at $135 on sale plus the Aputure Light Box 45x45 at $59, which folds flat, gives me the same key light in a hotel room as at home. Powered from the VB99 Pro through the Nanlite D-Tap cable at $44.20, it does not need a convenient outlet either.
I carry SanDisk Extreme PRO microSDXC 512GB cards at $139.99 for the Pocket 3, action cameras and drone, and the OWC Envoy Pro mini 1TB at $257.72 to offload to. Cards are cheap next to a lost day of filming, and footage that exists in only one place on a trip is footage you might lose.
It is light and packs small, which is the whole reason it travels rather than staying home. Check the rules wherever you are going before you pack it, because plenty of places will not let you fly it and a grounded drone is dead weight.
The Sony GP-VPT2BT wireless grip at $97 gives me record and zoom in my hand and folds into a mini tripod. The Insta360 3m selfie stick at $89.99 on sale, paired with the X5, produces shots that look like someone was flying a drone above me. Both solve the same problem in opposite directions.
It handles cuts, captions and quick social edits without carrying the MacBook. Anything heavy waits until I am home. The Apple Pencil Pro at $99.99 on sale is what I use for notes and thumbnail sketches on the same device.
The UGREEN Revodok 1071 at $16.99 on sale weighs nothing and covers most ports. The Belkin braided USB-C cable at $19.99 survives being stuffed in a bag repeatedly. These are the cheapest items you will pack and the most likely to end a shoot when one goes missing, so bring two of each.
The Elgato Prompter is excellent and I leave it at home every time. Everything you pack has to earn its weight twice: once carrying it and once deciding whether to use it. Gear you carry and do not use makes you film less, not more.
I use the Peak Design Everyday Loop Case, which is durable, slim and works with the rest of the Peak Design mounts I already carry. Beyond that, the action camera goes where the expensive body does not. The DJI Action 6 at $449 exists so my $2,798 camera never has to be near water.
